Florida stories and settings have inspired Hollywood for decades from space travel to Cuban mob wars, sexy Jazz scenes and alien encounters. The following list features some of our favorites and available for streaming on Hulu in each pyramid chalet.

The Laundromat

This 2019 new release with Meryl Streep is set and filmed in the Florida Keys and Miami. When an idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of sketchy dealings linked to a Panama City law firm. Founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas) are experts in the evil ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful.


This 1983 classic drug lord movie was directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone. It is a remake of the 1932 film and tells the story of Cuban refugee Tony Montana (Al Pacino) who arrives in 1980s Miami with nothing and rises to become a powerful drug lord. The legendary chainsaw scene was filmed at 728 Ocean Drive on South Beach, Miami and other scenes were shot in the Florida Keys.

Apollo 13

Everything is going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit until an oxygen tank explodes. This 1995 drama is based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission, astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks), Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon). The scheduled moon landing is called off, tensions rise among the crew and numerous technical problems threaten survival and their return to Earth. Much the film was shot in Florida on Merritt Island and Kennedy Space Center.

In this 1996 remake of the classic French farce “La Cage aux Folles,” engaged couple Val Goldman (Dan Futterman) and Barbara Keeley (Calista Flockhart)  introduce their future in-laws. Val’s father, Armand (Robin Williams), is a gay Miami drag club owner who pretends to be straight and attempts to hide his relationship with Albert (Nathan Lane), his partner and the club’s flamboyant star attraction from the bride’s father, the controversial Republican Senator Kevin Keeley (Gene Hackman). The Birdcage was filmed at The Carlyle hotel on Ocean Drive in Miami Beach.


In this 1985 oscar-winning fantasy, the residents of a Florida senior home get a new lease of life when they stumble across an alien “fountain of youth” in a disused holiday home. Unbeknownst to them, aliens have been using the swimming pool in the house to store their cocooned brethren, giving the waters a powerful, rejuvenating quality. The film was shot in and around St. Petersburg, Florida and earned two Academy Awards.

Magic Mike

Set in the world of male strippers, Magic Mike is directed by Steven Soderbergh and stars Channing Tatum in a story inspired by his real life as a male dancer in Tampa. The 2012 film follows Mike (Tatum) as he takes a young dancer called The Kid (Pettyfer) under his wing and schools him in the fine arts of partying, picking up women, and making easy money.

The Truman Show

He doesn’t know it, but everything in Truman Burbank’s (Jim Carrey) life is part of a massive TV set. Executive producer Christof (Ed Harris) orchestrates “The Truman Show,” a live broadcast of Truman’s every move captured by hidden cameras. Cristof tries to control Truman’s mind, even removing his true love, Sylvia (Natascha McElhone) from the show and replacing her with Meryl (Laura Linney). As Truman gradually discovers the truth, he must decide whether to act. Primary set location for the movie was Seaside, Florida. Seaside is a beach cottage community in Seagrove Beach, Florida.

Where the Boys Are

Beautiful Midwestern college girls travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida for spring break. On their search for romance and adventure, Merritt falls for the charismatic Ryder Smith (George Hamilton), while Tuggle becomes briefly involved with the dim TV Thompson (Jim Hutton). Though the young women have plenty of good times, they find that the trip isn’t all fun and games in this 1960 coming of age film shot mostly in Fort Lauderdale.

Some like it Hot

The story takes place Florida, though the filming was at the famous Hotel Coronado in San Diego, CA. After witnessing a Mafia murder, slick saxophone player Joe (Tony Curtis) and his patient buddy, Jerry (Jack Lemmon), improvise a quick plan to escape from Chicago with their lives. Disguising themselves as women, they join an all-female jazz band and hop a train bound for sunny Florida. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band’s sexy singer, Sugar (Marilyn Monroe), Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire as things heat up and mobsters close in.


Raised on a sharecropping plantation in Northern Florida, Legendary soul musician Ray Charles is portrayed by Jamie Foxx in this Oscar-winning 2004 movie. Young Ray watches his 7-year-old brother drown at age seven. When he loses his sight at the age of 9, his hardworking mother (Sharon Warren) urges him not to feel sorry for himself. He rises through the ranks of the Seattle jazz scene, struggling with drug addiction and infidelity while on the road. Supported by his wife (Kerry Washington), Ray Charles redefines soul music and inspires a generation.
